BUT I'd like a few crazy ideas that might unite whatever they come up with
into a plausible whole, to rope them into the Occult Underground (and get them
further interested in the game). Any ideas?
The guys are a group of fans of a dead celebrity, maybe a musician or musicians and they try to contact one of these dead celebrities via a ouija board.

The ghost they speak to on the oiuja board starts sending them messages through email in the same bad-spelling TXT-speak that comes out of ouija boards. As the game progresses the ghost can narrate clues or leave threatening messages.
