Greetings UA fans one and all. I'm a longtime fan of
this game ever since its original softcover book with
the fantastically eerie dead man on a kitchen table
pic. Was devastated to see John Tynes declare on the
unknown-armies.com site that further supplements were
looking unlikely. Why is such a fantastic game
overlooked by the masses? It's a crying shame.
Anywho, thought I'd rejoin this list and see what the
people are buzzing about. I recall this group as
always being good for bringing up any number of
off-kilter subjects to intrigue the mind. Also wanted
to suggest a newish comic series that I personally see
as being an ideal UA campaign.
"The Exterminators" is a monthly from DC/Vertigo
written by Simon Oliver and drawn (typically) by Tony
Moore. Dig this, cats. You've got Henry: a reformed
criminal with a shady past that includes brushes with
white supremacy in jail and mysterious mob
connections. You've got Stretch: a buddhist cowboy.
There's a bug eating Carpenters fan who dons wrestling
gear at night and battles rapid animals in an
underground fighting circuit. There's a bizarre stone
scarab from Egypt. There's a mysterious corporation by
the name of Ocran that's employing a domineering
lesbian businesswoman. It's even got a business called
the Libarius Fantaisus where "the intellectually
aroused come to play out their literary fantasies."
Oh and on top of that, roaches in L.A. are getting
smarter, more numerous, and exhibiting swarming
behavior.
I really, really want to run a campaign using an
exterminating company as a jump-off point now. Sooo
bad.
That's what I love about UA; you can do tons of stuff
with the system. The user definied skills, the
psychology meters, and the secret injury rule all add
incredibly to story driven roleplaying. It doesn't
have to be entirely canon from the books. You can take
new madness (yours or inspired, like the above) and
mix it right in with any of the adepts, avatars,
cults, wackos, prophets, mystic sites, rituals, etc.
from the line.
