My reckoning is that the person erased, as you said,
is erased. The magic seamlessly deletes the memory,
but there will be certain conditions of the deleta. If
the Mackie has children, his response is that they're
his kids and they were born on this-and-that date from
his wife - he might be reminded of his deleted wife
through ancillary conditions - but his wife is now a
purely fictionalised creation.

If the Mackie keeps extensive notes and diaries, he
may assemble a fairly accurate picture of the
relationship, but it's still just a fictionised
autobiography. Perhaps the player of the Mackie could
keep a Mind skill called Memory Assembly which fills
in for his deleted memories - not close to the
original, but enough to stop him going nuts.
