I'm reminded of an of episode of Astro Boy (or Mighty Atom, depending on the version you
saw) where a scientist had created an artificial child as a son. When the child was
supposed to have aged, the scientist just created a replacement body and transferred the
consciousness over. The 'child' had no idea he wasn't real.
Perhaps a mechanomancer might try the same thing.
