Consider two characteristics common to all children: frequent (about once
a year) trips to the doctor's office and a lack of coherent long-term
memory. A mechanomancer 'pedia-technician' would have to be in on it,
whether or not either parent is. When the child comes in for check-ups,
the pedia-technician turns a screw or puts a paper clip into the slot
(hmm...so that's what bellybuttons are for, updating firmware), which
causes the child to devour his own memories to fuel the next 'growth
spurt'.
Of course, what happens when the person is an adult, and some knife attack
forces that mode on permenantly... The person is getting perpetually
bigger and buffer, at the cost of identity and memory. In a single PC
game, you could run it like memento, with events proceeding backwards, and
the PC getting perpetually weaker as the game progresses, until he figures
out what's going on.
