I had problems understanding both these things, and I live in America.
I had never heard of that baseball, and also thought they were talking
about North African heroes. I wonder if some of the belief that Ua is
US-centric comes from Americans finding these things, realizing they're
some aspect of the culture they don't know about, and seeking out info,
while those in other countries think that this info is commonly known
in America.
I do know who Horatio Alger is, but still found the text misleading at
first.
