I've been studying martial arts for a while, and I've found much the
same... no one I've trained with or talked to who's engaged in realistic
training has ever reacted to "The guy pulls a gun on you" with anything
other than "I toss him my wallet."

At the risk of sounding like a bit of a bastard... ask your ninjitsu
friends if they ever spar in class.  If they say anything along the lines
of "No, the techniques we learn are too deadly", start ignoring anything
they say about real combat.
