No, no - no offense taken. Hence the ;-). (Invent tone of voice for the internet, and the world will beat a path to your door.) Having lived in Europe I'd say the difference is that over here people are much more rabid about protecting first ammendment rights/seperation of church and state, etc. whearas Europeans don't sweat it as much.
If we locked up everyone who makes crackpot statements over here, Texas would practically be empty. ;-)
Besides, the ACLU et. all make their living on raising a stink. Sometimes it's necessary, and sometimes it's a tempest in a teapot. The Daily Show (An American news/comedy show that's one of the funniest on TV, IMO) already interviewed this woman, making her look like a true boob.

Just in case you or someone else found what I wrote offensive, what I meant
is not so much the fact that the mayor of Inglis did what she did but that
it actually gets press coverage and that human rights associations or in
fact anyone could be arsed to even comment on this. It seems that no idea
can be too lunatic in the US not to get widespread response. Life in Europe,
by comparison, seems so much more boring. We just lock those people away and
be done with it...
Oh my god, that was probably even more offensive. (Ducks)
