Hmmm... I have mixed feelings about emoticons. On the
one hand, I think people need practice reading and
writing, interpreting the written word as is,
especially over a medium like the internet (just like
our primordial ancestors did with snail mail.)

However, being brutish and harsh in my mannerisms, I
am well aware how easy it is to offend someone else
with a seemingly innocent or intentionally sarcastic
statement made by electronic media.

Fortunately, I really don't care if I offend anybody,
so I don't have to worry about using emoticons myself.
I just assume if someone sent a message to me, they
want to correspond and that's communication enough.

Which gets me to the UA part of this diatribe. Lots
of spooky things can happen to warp someone's day,
particularly in the form of the media. Can anyone
think of something cruel and twisted to do with
emoticons?

The best thing I've come up with so far is to have the
sweet "just kidding" emoticons in a nastily sarcastic
peice of e-mail start talking or, better yet, laughing
and screaming.
