Aw shucks, ma'am... it weren't nothin'... awful kind of ya...
Actually, HMRTSF was the second-least pitchable of a bunch of UA stuff I wrote
up for Heliograph, Inc's almost-was magazine, Utopia Limited. Just about the
time Matt Goodman told me that UL was stuck in the zeppelin bomb-bay, so to
speak, and I had all this stuff to try and float off elsewhere, that issue of
Demonground came up and the topic seemed to suit San Felice so damned well that
I sent it over. I was pretty surprised to see it appear!
I've always loved pocket universes in games; the Cardboard Palace, as you
mentioned, is one of the coolest artefacts in UA. I also drew inspiration from
Danny the Street and Orquith, the city of the Black Book, both of which appeared
in Grant Morrison's excellent Doom Patrol comic; Carcosa and the Night Floors,
from Delta Green: Countdown, is another of my favourite pocket universes, and of
course no list would be complete without the damn, damn, DAMN fine House of
Renunciation. What a wicked concept.
