If they don't know about the artefacts in PoMoMa...

They return to the house to find no-one there. They track the children down
to an orphanage, the best way to reach which - oddly enough - is by train
due to some weird geographical feature. They've got two or three stations to
pass before their stop.
At station one, the lights go out. By station two, it's dark outside. They
can't see anything. Passengers getting on speak in antiquated phraseology.
By the time they reach their stop and climb out, they look back to see a
steam train and a row of Pullman carriages.

When they get to the orphanage, everyone's speaking this weird dialect.
They're back to the Alter Tongue place and time.

NOTE: Generally speaking, I don't like time travel. I do, however, like
this; it could be worked with a car, but it'd be harder to do. A plane would
be fun, though. The vehicle gradually changes, as do the passengers around
them.

After this, to get them back to the right time, maybe they could do a deal
with the Comte or someone like him (you may wish to have him recognise them,
if they don't know they've met him. Comments on ageing well would be
enjoyable.)
