I just assumed that it was an automatic stress check
regardless of rank. I suppose someone with 10 hardened
notches could be immune to that, but I'd rather think that
even the most hardened individual still has that one
irrational fear of mice.

If Joe is attacked by a mugger with a knife, that may be a
rank 1 Violence check. If that mugger was dressed as a
clown, and Joe has a fear stimulus of clowns because he was
molested by Bozo, then even if he had 10 hardened notches
in the appropriate category, I'd still make him roll a fear
check.

But I'm not sure if the rules are clear on that. I don't
have the book with me, and it sounds like you've dissected
it pretty well. But I could see the fear stimulus
overriding any hardened notches. It is, after all, an
irrational fear.

My opinions, anyway.

=====
The fact that a relatively unknown director like Peter Jackson can convince Hollywood to fund a mega-trilogy like Lord of the Rings is proof that Peter Jackson either slept with someone influential, or that someone important in Hollywood actually measured a director by talent rather than name recognition. The former is more plausible.
