There is another possibility, one I'm playing with in
my group (or, would be, if my group hadn't just
splintered. Sigh.)
What if some Archetypes can only be channelled by
social groups, rather than individuals? I beleive
this has already been covered, but I'm working with it
right now, so I might as well mull it over. (If
anyone knows more-or-less where it was covered, I'd
appreciate it. Those are some honkin' huge archives
and I've loaned out my copy of Stratosphere to a
friend at the moment.)
In other words, the characters don't HAVE to be
Avatars themselves to draw on the power of the Tripple
Goddess, they just have to be three different people
who take on parts of the social dynamic.
Or the Court. You needn't have a true king, but maybe
your group gets social benefits for acting like a
Court (well, of course it does, but I mean MYSTICAL
social benefits as well as whatever rewards are
associated with kissing kingly butt.)
Any syncretic diety might be spread across a small
group, channelling a bit of its power in subtle ways.
When the group is acting together, the power of the
divine manifests itself - things go the characters'
way, social interactions become more meaningful, clues
fall into their laps, that kind of thing. When the
characters are at odds or going different directions,
the, um... "syncretic force" is split up and there's
no special benefits.
Yeah, I kinda like the idea of syncretic archetypes.
It may be a gross violation of the terms involved, but
sometimes that's what roleplaying's all about.
