I was working with this line. The Name of the Rose is one of my favorite books.
And the novels (and show) of Cadfael, The Crime-Fightin' Monk, are some of my
favorite, corny genre fiction. Being as that's the case, I've done the Dark Abbey in
lots of stuff, and I wanted to stretch a little. I've drawn a mental image of
Crestone Mtn as kind of a fairy realm. Things there are subtly exaggerated to
heighten the interplay of light and dark. I did this pretty successfully with Mesa
Verde, when I temporarily hijacked a friend's DG group and insinuated them,
characters and all, into In Nomine. I want to bring this to a point in a monastery
on Crestone that seems at first to be very dark indeed, then emerges as an idyllic
place, where the characters can recuperate. The characters will be retracing their
steps from a previous adventure which ended with some meth-running bikers giving up
their 1%er lifestyle for the .01%er life of a monk. They want to interview one of
the bikers for information that may be pertinant to their current
investigation--which involves an (apparently) evil Star Chamber buried within the
ATF. That's almost irrelevant, though, since I've almost decided the whole thing is
a red herring designed to give me time to think out the resolution of the campaign,
and give the players time to heal up a little before the real shit comes down.
So--the former biker was going to be the suspect or the first vic in a
Cadfeal/NotR monastic mystery, but I realized then that two of the five players had
done that schtik with me before and I wanted to do something different. Now,
however, after your comments and some thought, I think I'll keep the mystery, but I
still want to make it surreal and juicy, going in some uniquly UA directions away
from the original mystery premise. Any further ideas?
