One of the most obvious things is too play off the fact that a monk avoids
the bulk of what we think of as life to stay in a large building and study
the lessons of books. Does that sound familliar on any level.
The easist premise with this is that some monk or circle of monks has
unlocked the secret to some new kind of magic. With that happening, there
would be a shift in power in said monastary and all the accoutrements of a
sudden increase in magical energies (unnatural phenomena, freak occurrences,
perhaps even some kind of panic or freak out in the monastary). The
characters could be either investigators from within the church (order of
St. Cecil types) or "reality cops" who've heard about wierd things happening
from stories told in town.
Another option is to go the Name of the Rose way. One of the monks kills
another and the body disappears. The characters are cops sent to
investigate. Their investigations lead to books about theurgy and secret
mysteries. They read more and more twisted shit until the second monk dies.
This second one was hung (I like using the rope that rings bells for this.
The dramatic single gong predicates the loss of a life.). This second one
heard about the crazy stuff from the cops. Finally this monk who's trying
to protect everyone's purity tries to steal and destroy these books and kill
the last remaining witnesses, the cops...
