FYI:
Whatever happened to the US in '78 manifested China,
too - the youth (that I've known) do not trust a
government's version of events any more than my own
post-Watergate generation. Can anyone guess at what
got into the IC to cause this?
Don't get too up about the Corrupt Politico or the
Untrusting Citizen. Baudrillard's had an interesting
bit in _Simulacra_and_Simulation_ about the watergate
scandal:
According to him, the scandal itself (and the reaction
against it) was not the reducing morals or a betrayal,
but an affirmation of propriety and order. Convincing
the world that the event was actually a scandal was an
homage to the Law, reinjecting a large dose of
political morality on a world scale, and mistrust into
the public mind.
Maybe the war in Vienam or some other timely conflict
allowed the Disillusioned Dreamer to ascend, or maybe
just replace one that found its way up during WWI.
The result was an resigned idealism without hope that
the dream of [insert ideal situation here] will come
about. The disillusion and apathy that spread did not
discredit the dream so much as confirm its existance.
The new influence of the Disillusioned Dreamer may
have ushered in blaming convinient targets and the
cold clockwork cure of German agression and the Final
Solution, not to mention full-blown Japanese invasion
of Asia, the rise of the Bolshivics (sp?) the
abandonment of central government in China that
started the time of the last warlords in China (the
Masterless Man's work?).
-------------
Presto: new Archetype with a cool twist, and the
quietly screaming global manifestation of his arrival
in the IC.
I'm not much for designing channels or taboos. Any
thoughts? A good symbol might be the One-Eyed Jack,
or other signs with one eye open and the other closed,
comparing the world with the hopeless Dream. Also,
the chad (including all the hanging, pregnant and
dimpled variations) - a recognized goal, but without
enough belief to disloge a perforated piece of paper.
Regards,
