Londo's overarching plot in Babylon 5 goes a bit like this. No hero exactly to act like his good conscious (perhaps Vir or G'Kar), but he does eventually realize that his initial desires for power and emperorhood come at a very high cost.

It's a sort of Hegelian heroism, the way you outlined it. Hero presents thesis, villain presents antithesis, together they reach some synthesis.
