Actually, this has happened in my longest running game to date. It is a
Mage game set in Victorian London focusing on the transition of the Order
of Reason to the Technocracy. The players are all members of the
Freemasons, the conservative sect of the Order which is resistant to the
new regime and its anti-mysticism and utilitarian bent. When the campaign
began, one of the group's antagonists was a powerful Masonic banker who
had sold his soul for infernal power in order to use it to stop the
transition from coming about. Since this was also the party's motive and
it was difficult to work against him explicitly since we was a fellow
Mason, a subtle power game ensued which eventually led to a mutual
understanding. The antagonist eventually admitted that his infernal deal
was a mistake and that his attempts to further the cause have been
tainted by it and now aids the party in their efforts instead.

Of course, there's a lot of moral ambiguity in our campaign. The party's
latest 'heroic' act was to assassinate Prince Albert. (I'll be happy to
provide circumstances and justification if anyone is interested. Probably
not here, though, since this isn't really on topic.)
