The legend I heard (which was turned into a cool Czech or German 
film a couple of years ago (exact nationality & title long forgotten).  
was that the gun fired some number of shots that always hit their 
target, and then the last shot hit someone not aimed for 
(traditionally some loved one of the shooter).  The catch was that 
no one knew the last shot was different.
