Another possibility for the gun:  wasn't there a German legend about the
Devil's Gun? It would kill any target it was fired at, but after a
random number of shots, it would shoot & kill the current owner.  Such
an artifact would have special appeal to mechanomancers (major charge),
entropomancers (a series of sigs), avatars of the Executioner (one shot,
one kill)  & anyone collecting objects of power.

Maybe the cliomancer was trying to wipe out knowledge of the gun's
existence;  thus, physical records get deleted, but the gun *wants* to
be known, so legends like this grow up around it.
