For sites in Canada I'd use sights the average Canadian would recognize. 
For sights in France, sights the average Frenchman/woman would recognize. 
For sights in Sri Lanka, onces the averave Sri Lankan would recognize.  For
sights in Borneo, ones the average Bornean would recognize...

  The big problem with Cliomancy, as I see it, is that the 
  whole "famous" issue is VERY subjective (and more than a 
  little American-centric).
  
  I doubt that there is a single site in Canada that an 
  average man-on-the-street in the US could successfully 
  identify.
