_The Big Book of the Unexplained_ (by Doug Moench, DC Comics'
Paradox Press) has a few panels about this creepy fading voice
tale and other similar space-time distortions. Their tale presents
a young Oliver Lerch of South Bend, Indiana disappearing on
Christmas Eve 1890, and leaving an abrupt set of footprints
in the snow. My, my. The things you learn reading comics!

I was pretty sure another one of the Big Book series had
the version with the farmer, but I couldn't find it. Anyway,
here's the bibliography of the BBotU section if anyone wants
