How about this: Some teens set a LARP, and put this stuff as props. Then
they forgot to retrieve it. They are waiting for a chance to do it, when
the issue is forgotten. They didn't expected to draw all this attention.

Just think how our hobby is viewed sometimes, and the possible
misperceptions ("I'm not sure, but I think I saw strange figures dressed
in black...", , "well, I don't know nothing about what happened in the
woods, but I know some kids who engage in spiritism, ouija and these
things... and Bobby Williams has that strange book, he show it to me
once...") The PCs may find false clues related to the LARP, notes
describing false legends, occult books that don't exist, and so on. In
the end they may well suspect a cult is operating in the area, when it's
only a bunch of careless gamers.

To further complicate the matter, a ruthless duke is investigating and
decide the kids are in real occult stuff. So, when one of the kids
disappears, things get really serious...
