The Ambrose Bierce story that this is based upon is called "Charles
Ashmore's Trail", and originally appeared in a collection entitled _Can Such
Things Be?_ -- which has to be the best book titles I've ever heard of,
right up there with _Nibbled to Death by Ducks_, and _I Know a Trick Worth
Two of That_.

The Lerch story was made up in 1950, by Joseph Rosenberger...which he later
admitted. Of course, I suppose that it's possible that Lerch disappeared so
thoroughly that he ceased to have existed at all.
