If by 'damage deposit', you mean the same thing that Australians call 'bond' -
then yes, lots of times.  I've lived in about a dozen different houses over the
last 10 years; I've only lost parts of my bond 2 or 3 times, and never the whole
thing.

On the other hand, I suspect Brisbane landlords are more lenient than US ones,
and we have a Tenant's Union to kick them when they get out of line.

The only person I know who lost her complete bond is a friend of mine who was
evicted - along with her housemates - for falling behind in the rent.  The house
was filthy - which is what happens when the inhabitants are all heroin addicts
(inclufing my friend, sad to say).  A group of us scrubbed the place out for a
few days, just so the real estate agents wouldn't sue.  She lost her bond, but
didn't get blacklisted, which is the important thing.
