Something else to consider...go the other way, away
from "This is too scientific."

If the individual in question becomes enough a part of
the system, of the magic...couldn't it be possible
that they don't necessarily HAVE DNA?  Or to put it
another way (partially, probably, drawing from my
background in MtA)...there might have been a time,
before science defined everything, that there wasn't
DNA, etc...people were just people.  And becoming
enough a part of the magic, you begin to lose a lot of
the modern definitions of reality around yourself...
