There was a discussion about this a while back. I think the only thing mostly agreed on was Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

I've been thinking and I decided that, if I were to n UA with musical background, I'd end up using the soundtrack from the Neverhood at some point. Bizarre, wacky music that seems like the main musician is drunk while composing and performing the songs, so I figured I'd make it music to play when Jeeter's about to show up, or to be counterpoint to the gritty violence during a nasty firefight. (What's the Neverhood you ask? a claymation video game by the maker of Earthworm Jim that's based off the book of genesis. really. http://www.neverhood.com/ )

Sadly, the CD is no longer available. It was the best twelve dollars I've ever spent (and that included shipping and handling). You can probably still by the game, and get a good idea there.

That's enough rambling about obscure music for me, today anyway.
