You want to hear some unsettling lyrics? Man, go straight for the golden
oldies. I listen to 'em at work because (1) I like 'em, (2) the station
comes in clearly and (3) I figure it's something everyone can agree on.
But hoo boy, are there unsettling subtexts a-plenty!
You won't have to listen too long to stumble across the whole rape/mind
control/you're my property subtext ("I'm gonna make you love me... yes I
will, yes I will" "Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, from you baby...").
Then you'll get into the creepy, sicko obsessive love songs. (Like "Teen
Angel" where the car stalls on the railroad tracks, the guy and his girl
get out safely, but she runs back into the car to get his class ring and
gets creamed. Brrr!)
The one that really gave me the willies though, I don't know who sang it.
I think the title is "Little Children" and the whole first verse could be a
verbatim quote from a molester to his victim. ("Don't tell your father...
I'll buy you candy if this is our little secret...") Of course, it turns
out that the kid caught the guy necking with the kid's older sister (whew!)
but it's still very disturbing.
-G.
Plus, if you listen long enough your oldies station will probably play
"What Condition My Condition Was In."
