Those are an unfortunate result of a basic design decision I made: every
chapter starts with a double-page spread. That means that if the previous
chapter ends on an even-numbered page, there is a blank odd-numbered page
to complete the pair before you go to the next spread where the chapter
starts.
(All of Pagan Publishing's books are laid out this same way, in fact. I'm
a creature of habit.)
I try to avoid them in layout, but it gets tricky. What this most likely
means is more use of freaky photographs as free filler, which I presume
are moderately more interesting than blank space. But I don't like just
using them willy-nilly in the text, since I don't mean them as
replacements for illustrations...it's all very stupid and anal-retentive,
I fear. Designomancy or something.
