Well, I kinda liked the explanation from "Cryptozoology" for Conspiracy X.
Faeries are a type of divergent branch of hominid which acquired a natural
magickal talent.
If the "faeries fear iron" thing is a mythological explanation for an iron
age culture conquering a bronze age culture, it's probably possible that
the "humans" interbred with the "faeries" (both are humans, really, just
different subspecies). Every once in a while, the recessive genes get
together in just the right way to produce a faerie. They tend to mature
faster, are born with instincts that mimic human behavior in many ways (and
produce the idea that changeling children are preternaturally intelligent,
live longer (though not as long as vampires), and because of the amount of
recessive genes in them, tend toward either great beauty or great ugliness.
The ghosts of dead faeries are naturally drawn to living faeries and teach
them secret magicks in exchange for a chance to act out old desires.
Okay, so I eventually threw magick and ghosts into the mix. It's late,
I'm sick, and this is off the top of my head.
