Attached is this week's NASMHPD Weekly Update, containing:

(1) news that adolescent use of e-cigarettes is declining only slightly, despite evidence of an association between smoking and vaping and the severity of COVID-19 symptoms;

(2) details of a study of emergency department  usage at a hospital in Madrid conducted during the height of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in that country that appears to show a reduced number of suicide-related visits to the ED, despite recent findings and assumptions that the pandemic has significantly increased suicidal ideation among many population groups;

(3) exciting news that Reps. Judy Chu and Adrian Smith are about to introduce legislation that would provide Medicare coverage for peer support services provided under a collaborative care model or other integrated care HCPCS codes to individuals with mental illness or substance use disorders;

(4) Information on a study by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities finding that Medicaid enrollment has shot up 8.4 percent as a result of the pandemic and the measures taken to control the pandemic;;

(5) the sad news that Dr. Jonas R. Rappeport, the founder and first president of the American Academy of Psychiatry and Law and a pioneer in forensic psychiatry, died in Maryland on September 8 at the age of 95;

(6) the findings of a Kaiser Family Foundation Health Tracking Poll released this week that most Americans do not expect a COVID-19 vaccine before the election, and that only 4 in 10 Americans would get a vaccine made available before the election;

(7) an announcement of the availability of free CME/CE credits to eligible health care providers who access the University of California at San Francisco's recorded webinars on a wide array of topics related to smoking cessation;

(8) this week's Crisis Now Crisis Talk discussion with the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention's Education Development Center Director, Collen Carr, on the continual challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic; and

(9) a wide assortment of new virtual conferences scheduled over the next few months, including the National Dialogues on Behavioral Health, which will hold one session weekly over six consecutive weeks beginning September 17.

We hope you find this information of value.

Have a great weekend, and

Stay Well,
