Attached is the August 28, 2020 edition of the NASMHPD Weekly Update. It contains stories on:

(1) the Veterans' Administration's Uniting for Suicide Postvention Program, which helps members of the military and others surviving a suicide loss cope with their grief;

(2) the data, still lacking, on COVID-related testing, illnesses, deaths, and hospitalizations among racial minority Americans;

(3) this week's Crisis Now Crisis Talk discussion with Dr. Robert Drake, founder of the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model of supported employment for individuals with mental illness or substance use disorders, who says employment is the most critical intervention in crisis prevention and recovery; and

(4) the growing campaign by the American Association of Anesthesiologists and other medical professionals against the use of Ketamine by law enforcement personnel in calming agitated subjects of arrest, particularly in minority neighborhoods.

There is also notice of an upcoming September 23 webinar by the National Coalition on Mental Health and Aging on social determinants of health for older adults and a Virtual Native Talking Circle scheduled for mid-day on alternate Mondays by the Addiction Technology Transfer Center Network.

We hope you find this information useful.

Next weekend is Labor Day weekend, which means that this coming week is the last week of summer. ... So the NASMHPD Weekly Update will be taking the week off. We will return on September 11.

Have a great week, a magnificent and safe holiday, and we'll see you when we (and Congress) return.

Stay Well,
