Hi Coles —

Check out the SolarCal tool that’s part of the CBE comfort tool<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__comfort.cbe.berkeley.edu_&d=CwMFaQ&c=xB5UQg5qXm2axe_t44neldV-XNditz6D2ZXZLA0vHlE&r=JrIPsTq2z-_669uhqn51VqSZFL7dpX6NqxKBTKpeQZ9m5XksAJHnQhCI_rEcbMFG&m=nU6LHcQ4aBmhwTechTrjK8cl0YEv7Ow0r7_Vrg2Nr80&s=37_xca0AtScOBkeQ7l_r4aWo3iinWtRjXjdgxF_dgSU&e=>. It provides a way to modify the MRT based on solar radiation. There is also a component of Ladybug (a Grasshopper plugin) called the Outdoor Solar Temperature Adjustor that will perform a similar calculation. Both are based on Arens et al (2015)<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__escholarship.org_uc_item_89m1h2dg&d=CwMFaQ&c=xB5UQg5qXm2axe_t44neldV-XNditz6D2ZXZLA0vHlE&r=JrIPsTq2z-_669uhqn51VqSZFL7dpX6NqxKBTKpeQZ9m5XksAJHnQhCI_rEcbMFG&m=nU6LHcQ4aBmhwTechTrjK8cl0YEv7Ow0r7_Vrg2Nr80&s=Y0Vwua0oaDkuykTBTlA2ZrW8CBXj0zMGg-NYlYMufjQ&e=>.

Best,
Nathan

Hello all,

I’ve been asked by a client to complete a shading analysis that quantifies the impact of an exterior canopy on the comfort of occupants outside of the building in a courtyard area. In the past, I’ve done solar irradiance simulations to show the effect of shading, but irradiance doesn’t directly translate to comfort in a straightforward way.

I’d like to be able to quantify how the canopy will increase the amount of time that occupants will want to spend outside in the courtyard. For example - per this metric, the number of comfortable hours in the courtyard will increase by X% over the year.

I know the heat index is commonly used to assess comfort, but this only includes temperature and humidity, not a solar component.

Has anybody completed a study like this? If so, what metrics did you use to provide meaningful feedback on the effect of the exterior shading on occupant comfort (outside of the building)?

Thanks,
