Some of my thoughts on real world paradoxical obsessions which I use to try
and keep me in line to create schools, and to give me an idea of just how
messed up adepts are:
Wife Beaters: (Probably the best one in my opinion) Some claim they have to
beat their wives to keep them from leaving or that they beat their wives
because they love them SO MUCH. There is a guy on Dr. Phil (my wife watches
it, not me, ok?), who "loves" his wife so much that, in the past, he has
locked her in the basement to keep her from leaving, and has, on occasion,
chained her to the bed while she is asleep to keep from losing her. That is
a paradox.
Addicts: They may take drugs to feel empowered, but they really become
prisoners of the chemicals and can't function without them.(Dipsomancers)
They may take drugs to be "happy", but keep waking up with a deep sense of
shame over the things they do while high. (make the addiction sex, and you
have Pornomancers)
Work-a-holics: Some people work 90+ hours each week because they want to
take care of their families. The family never sees them, they cannot
remember their children's names, and the spouse eventually leaves. Some
people work very hard to make money that they will never have time to spend
because they are at work so much. (Plutomancers)
Adepts are more messed up than these guys, and they have the added bonus
that their freaky behavior actually works.
