I once shared a hotel room for a weekend with a guy
who brought an electric massage mat and insisted he
could not sleep properly unless he had it running,
producing an irritating whm-whm-whm in the process. An
automaton could certainly be "wound" by the repetitive
rhythmic motions of such a device and, if unaware of
its true nature, would presumably only know that a
restful sleep is nearly impossible without one.
