[UA] Last Minute Details

In such cases, the automaton has to have someone else flex the leg, turn the key, etc. The idea is that energy is transferred from some external source to the automaton- self-winding is a zero-sum activity, which is a no-no in UA.

While I don't have my books in front of me, I seem to recall that some
automations can be recharged via repetitive motion ( IIRC, PoMoMa gives the
example of flexing / extending a leg 100 times ).

Perhaps the automation is compelled to perform particularly repetitive
karate katas, tai-chi movements, yoga, etc. which serve the same function?

Oddly, in the campaign I just half-ran, I had to deal with the same problem.
One of the characters, unbeknownst to him, was an automaton copy of an
insane mechanomancer (the mechanomancer is currently dead or missing).
Anyhow, this is how I set it up, because I didn't want him exploding: In the

furnace room of the dorms there is a spinning handle (like a bike pedal)
hooked up to the misc. machinery down there. The character blacks out,
essentially sleepwalks down to the furnace room (which he can pretty much
always open because it's a cheap college lock and as an automaton he has
that bonus to mechanical rolls), puts his hand on the handle and lets it
wind him up until he's "full". He then returns to his dorm room (or
where-ever he slipped away from) and remembers nothing. Usually he does this

late at night, during a "class" he doesn't really have (but isn't aware he
doesn't have), or with some other excuse. The excuse making and choosing the

time to go is entirely subconscious, a mechanism built-in by the
mechanomancer who never wanted his "son" to realize he wasn't real. Now, if
the mechanomancer in your scenario is still around/alive, he might have set
it up, done some tweakings on his "child", so that a similar thing goes
down. If not, then maybe the automaton is just set to "instinctually" seek
out things that it can use to charge up.

BUT if you choose to use the "perpetual motion" automaton? And it's a girl?
Can you just picture her getting a boyfriend, they become close... then
boom? First she maybe gets a bit more
hyper/upbeat/peppy/neurotically-tightly-wound, then right as her boyfriend
(or girlfriend, I suppose) is about to/just has broken up with her, she
blows up. Or right after a major relationship breakthrough and (wild,
passionate, ENERGETIC) intimacy, some murmured words of peace, love,
affection, BOOM, bits of girlfriend everywhere, heartbroken and very
confused significant other lying bruised on the bed.

Either way.
