There are some similarites to the UA game that I've been running. Not in the
specifics, but the PCs have learned that they have done Very Bad Things in
the past, and been Very Bad People.
One of the PCs has a hypnotism skill, and tried a bit of amateur
hypno-therapy in the park. When asked to remember if he had ever killed
anyone, the target started screaming (a la Homer in The Simpsons :)
The other PCs are now -very- reluctant to remember any of their blackouts,
and the one who -does- remember killing dozens of people is biter that he
has no-one else to share and understand his trauma.
So I'd say that your idea would probably work in a similar way - the players
want to learn more information, but they don't want to make Madness checks
from doing so, thus there are tough decisions to be made.
