Perhaps he isn't trying to ascend, but trying to
create an elaborate spirit-trap for the "inferior"
student. His death-by-murder could be a ruse to
elevate the docile, dead student into a predatory
demon.

The demon is agitated and summoned by the people in
what should be a wake, but is a light-hearted party
filled with subtle triggers to the demon's Passions
(strangulation, inferiority complexes, and family).

With the new demon freshly charged-up on all the
comflicting images and conversations he is psychically
bruised and subdued.

Perhaps the murderer is a form of psychological
psychopomp - discharging all the "negative emotional
energies" into the tormented spirit.

Then the demon loses it and goes crazy at the party.
Gore and hilarity ensues.

Cheers,

Chris.
