Two things immediately come to mind.

1) They need to hear rumors about this evil, ruthless, remorseless band of
occult fixers.  Scare them shitless before they realize -- hey, that's US.

2) Give them failed and hardened notches they don't know about, or even
some minor phobia of uncommon things they will encounter.  ("You don't know
why the scent of spearmint frightens you, but your pulse is elevated and
you're short of breath.")

The nifty in this is that their phobias (and startling sangfroid in the
face of weird violence) can clue them in to #1.  Or if you give them a
particularly bizarre phobia, it makes in flashback.
