The writing game always seemed like a labour of love to me....
I'm not sure how exactly it would work but if your goal was 4k could you 
create some sort of low interest shelter with a bank for the payments?
I was thinking of something like an escroe account, where the money is 
held and visible to all investors.  Once you hit your goal you take 
ownership of the capital and distribute your text.

You would also want to set a time limit of say, a year or so.  If at the 
end of that time you decide you don't/won't reach your goal you can return 
the money (that people have been able to monitor.)
