Simple answer: they're not adepts or avatars, they're Agents of 
Renunciation. And the Room they use? Yours. (hence the interior decorating).

That's kinda too obvious though, so what if the Agents of Renunciation 
gig is just a cover. What's really going on is that they're finding 
people who don't stand out and stealing  mundanity from them. After a 
given episode where do all the tasteless trinkets, bad t-shirts and 
shorn locks go? What can you do with the cast off essence of a person's 
life? The parts that defined them as unique from the uniform fashionable 
masses. Maybe build a better mouse? Someone totally bland, easily over 
looked but with the quirks of your choosing. It's the "Invisible Minions 
R Us" factory.
