My feeling is that the second edition is better in pretty much every way
possible (and some that are probably not even possible). I was, frankly,
fairly amazed when I got it.
It is rewritten from a number of viewpoints, which helped me, as a GM, and
seem to be excellent in terms of understanding the various levels the
characters can approach the game.
It tightens some of the mechanics a bit, and improves combat (although I
still don't used what is printed, but it is a step in the right
direction). Paradigm skills are cool.
Lots more rumours and information about the different groups and ways to
approach the occult underground. This stuff is good for the GM and for the
players.
And a lot more, besides. Its hard for me to think back to the first
edition now, actually, so I can't really recall all the differences (and
I've lent my first ed book to a player so she can run a one-shot for some
of her other friends).
Others may not agree (somewhere), but I'd rate UA 2nd edition as one of
the best "new editions of an existing game" I've ever read. And that's on
top of being one of the best rulesbooks I've ever owned.
Flip through it in a store, if you can. Check the starts of the major
sections, and dip here and there. That's going to be the best way to see
whether it will work well for you.
Take care,
Liam
