There's an optical illusion you've seen called the "Muller-Lyon" illusion (umlaut that u), http://www.optical-illusions.biowaves.com/OpticalIllusions4.cfm for an example, that only works for people who come from cultures where structures have right angles. People in cultures where there are few corners aren't susceptible. Psychology takes this as evidence that this is what we call a "top down" illusion, where our assumptions about the world is driving our perception.
