Right! My idea was to set up the beginning of the campaign in the 80s,
during the transition of the military to civil government. You have
plenty of goood elements: From 70s guerrila elements teaching the crime
factions, to military deathsquads going underground, adding up the
salvation cults, bone-crazy evangelists, and the traditional
afro-catholic syncrethism.

So yes, city of god is a good reference work -- and a punch in the
stomach. Also, the recently published books (don't think they were
translated) about the history of the military regime.

BTW, I pass by cidade de deus (and vila do joão) every day when
commuting, and I fid it amazingly the hability of adaption. Other day I
was driving close to the later and there were lots of people (it was hot
summer - 35 celsius at night) playing soccer. Then I heard gunshots, and
in a split second everybody went to the ground (and I stepped on) but
just after a few seconds of silence the game was resumed as if nothing
had happened ....
