Well, automatons and such have no souls and therefore can't be avatars.
Using the Pinocchio plot isn't bad, though.  You might have the Cyborg
be an archetype almost ready to ascend, with a potential IC member
trying his best to make himself more than human.  That's sort of the
plot in reverse, though.  Perhaps a character whose soul has been put
into an automaton body and is trying to restore his humanity could
ascend as the Pinnocchio archetype upon his return (he'd only rarely
get his IC seat challenged, I think).
