Perhaps he had some mystical connection with his wife, and only his
connection to her allowed him the photographic skill that he had.  But
he found that he hated her, and only kept with her as long as he did
for the mystic/artistic benefits.  When he left her, he found himself
unable to take a photo without getting the heads cut off, or his thumb
in the way.  (*Reconsiders idea for the archetype of the Muse*)

Perhaps he was an adept (photomancer?) who could achieve these
excellent photos by being emotionally detached from everything around
him.  After his family became fed up with this, he saw the error of
this path (likely the result of some Self checks), but they wouldn't
take him back.  So he left, and abandoned photography altogether.
