Luckily for me and my fellow citizens :-) , most organized tours
skip Bologna altogether, because 1) it's little known and 2) it's
halfway Venice and Florence.

That's a pity, because my city's got the greatest medieval city
centre still existant and the oldest university in the world (founded
in 1088). all of the centre's sidewalks are covered by porticoes,
which sum to over 46km of length. The whole city oozes a middle-
ages feel, which can be useful for your games. Moreover, your
character can eat the ***REAL*** lasagne here :-)

Going west, you could also check Carcassonne, in France. It is a
fortified city surrounded by THREE city walls. The Inquisition's
tribunal was located here during the schism of Avignon, in 14th
century.
