Not being American, I don't have any first-hand knowledge.

But there's plenty of evidence - including first-hand accounts from former
members - that a capital-M, Italian/Sicilian Mafia does exist in America. Or
at the very least, it _did_ exist. The current state of organized crime
seems much more decentralized, and far less organized along racial.ethnic
lines.

But still, the big-M Mafia does exist, and still carries baggage like rules
about ethnivity and pseudo-Catholic rituals. It's just that it's not the
only player any more, and has to share its chunk of the crimepie with
others.
