I agree completely.

But I also think that such 'assumption clash' can crop up in any RPG - UA or
D&D are no more or less vulnerable to it than any other games.

My campaigns used to suffer from a LOT of assumption clash problems. A few
years back, I started writing up clear outlines and contracts for my games -
I did one for the UA game I ran last year, and for the D&D game I'm running
now. Everyone's on the same page from day one, and things work a lot more
smoothly.
