Well, yeah! They have a stack of powers that makes
the munchkin in me sit up a drool. Anytime I see a
magic item and I think "I GOTTA have that," then my
other warning systems come on and I think "but no one
should."
Also, they are totally bent toward destruction. Not
that it's a bad thing, but the emotional element
entwined with all that death and carnage is a lot of
work.
The only way I could see working them into a game is
if the players got to see a lot of what it's like to
lose a friend/lover/etc. before they got hold of 'em,
then started tasting the wanton destruction such items
would cause.
For example:
I had a young woman in one of my games base her
character off "Johnny the Homocidal Maniac." This is
fine, on the surface. I like the comic book and all,
but the young woman wanted to do nothing but slaughter
people.
Since this was her goal, fine. It made it fairly easy
for her to stalk and kill whoever she liked, provided
she promised she'd leave the other players off her hit
list. It wouldn't have been UA if I'd let it go at
that, however.
I went into detail on every human she murdered. I made
sure she met people who loved the ones she killed AND
people who were happy to see them gone. I let her
pick and choose vile people to kill, but I made sure
that she understood every life she took removed
something from the world, it left a hole.
I didn't have to get sappy, I just had to do a lot of
detail work. It was fun the first few times she
killed someone, but, after that, she decided to tone
down the character and I breathed a sigh of releif.
Murder's tough to roleplay with emotional realism and
guns in an urban setting are almost pure murder.
